On June 8th, 2024 the Environmental Commission of the City of Twinsburg presented the annual Shred day in partnership with the City’s Service Department.
This event allows residents of the City of Twinsburg to bring up to six boxes or bags to be shredded at no cost to them.
The event runs 9AM – Noon, typically. This year, as it was my first time responsible for ensuring a successful execution of the event, I was just hoping people showed up. When I turned off Ravenna Road into the Public Works Department driveway I can honestly say I was shocked to see the line of cars was already out to the street by 8:40AM! When 9AM hit and we were ready to start shredding we were non-stop busy for the first half hour, car after car. After we worked to bring the line down, we had a consistent and steady stream of residents throughout the remaining duration of the event. Much different than we have seen in some recent years (how cool)!
As it got closer to noon, the representative with Shred America, the company the City had contracted with for the event let us know that we were nearing capacity in his truck. By 11:58 AM we had one final car pull into the lot to drop off two small paper bags full of documents, and with that, we had hit capacity. Had one more car come, even with a small bag/box, they would have been turned away. To me, this was a success, and I was happy.
As the representative with Shred America was shredding the last bin of material collected, I asked how much material had been collected. He glanced at a fancy computer monitor on his truck and said “around 53 bins, each weighing 200lbs”. That is equivalent to roughly 10,600lbs or 5.3 tons of shredded paper material collected and diverted from landfills!
Two days later, I am still in shock at how much paper was collected, and how efficiently ran it was. This event would not have been as seamless without the dedication of our service department workers, other members of the commission, or members of City Council who volunteered their Saturday morning to help collect documents and talk with residents.
While this is the City of Twinsburg’s only annual document shredding event, Summit County ReWorks often hosts various shred events free for Summit County Residents.
